Joel has had remarkable success in building his email list—in fact, he has more than 40,000 people on various email lists, and they have become his primary marketing tool. Joel writes in a conversational style, mixes free information with commercial offers, and maintains a high level of engagement with his readers.  He’s been launching the careers of self-publishers since 1994 from his book design and consulting practice at Marin Bookworks (also known as “JFBookman”) in San Rafael.

In this two-part workshop, Joel will walk you through the steps to get yourself set up, and then put your email list to use.

  • Crafting incentives

Session 2: Using Your Email List

  • What to mail, when to mail, and how often to mail
  • Newsletters, follow-ups, and broadcasts
  • What’s an “auto responder” and why should I care?
  • How to write an email that gets a response
  • Why you need a call to action
  • Email campaigns (sequences)
  • Book launches driven by email
  • Email best practices

There will be plenty of time for Q&A in both parts of the workshop, which is designed to be interactive. Bring your email questions and ideas—Joel would love to hear them.

Joel is the author of A Self-Publisher’s Companion: Expert Advice for Authors Who Want to Publish, and the co-author of  The Self-Publisher’s Ultimate Resource Guide. He is a columnist for Publishers Weekly, and Writer’s Digest has named him as one of the 10 people to follow in book publishing.

Joel writes TheBookDesigner, a popular blog on book design, book marketing and the future of the book. He’s also the founder of The Self-Publishing Roadmap, an online, video-based training course in book publishing.
