Future Meetings
February 10: BAIPA Meeting — Sharon Miller and Tayrn Edwards
Why Libraries are Good Friends for Independent Writers
Join Sharon Miller and Taryn Edwards, Library Director and Membership Services Librarian at the Mechanics’ Institute Library in San Francisco.
Sharon and Taryn will describe all the activities that a ‘real library” (the 107-year-old Mechanics’ Institute Library) is engaged in to support writers in every step of the writing process: peer support groups through training, self-publishing how-to’s, marketing, and even partnering with local independent book stores.
- Libraries buy 40% of published children’s books, and close to 10% of all publishing revenues are from library purchases. We will talk about:
- How to get the attention of librarians to get your book on library shelves.
- What our library is doing to support independent writers: peer support, training.
- Self-publishing how-to’s, book reviewing, marketing, public programming, partnership with local independent bookstores.
If you have a question to ask at the meeting, these librarians will not tell you to “shhh”!
Sharon is Library Director. Taryn, Membership Services librarian, is manager of our Authors’ Carnival programs for writers. Both are librarians who have worked in public and academic libraries.
